A Peek Inside

Tea_'sFridge

A new city, a new house, and a new refrigerator. Yep, it’s a brushed metal thing—one of those uber popular versions that I neither like nor dislike. That was until I discovered that you can’t put magnets on it, they won’t stick. Now I’ve decided I don’t like it so much (especially since I have the best fridge magnet ever, which now can't be used—sigh).

But I’m here to talk about what is in the fridge, not what will or won’t stick to the outside. Did you see Sam's post on what’s in her fridge? She’s sparked a slew of bloggers going foodie exhibitionist—baring the contents of their fridge for all to see.

I wanted to play along, but it’s taken me a while to actually build up enough in my fridge for it to be of any interest. But I've been enjoying the peeping Tom pleasure of looking into other people's fridges—my friend Jen has more fish in her freezer than I eat in a five year period (but then again, I don’t have a father who fishes in Alaska).

So here it is, the contents of my fridge. I’m still building up the condiment collection, starting from scratch is an interesting process. You just expect there to be soy sauce (or gluten-free Tamari, in my case), oil, or baking soda in the house. But each ingredient, each spice or sauce or spread, must be purchased. I brought a few things from California, but for the most part I’m starting from a blank slate.

So here is my new fridge. Clicking on the photos will take you to Flickr, where you can mouse over and see commentary on the contents—the good, the bad, and the excessive amount of herbs I have on my shelf.

And many thanks to Anita, at Married…with Dinner, for photo assistance.

maybe you could by one of those adhesive magnetic tapes so that you can use your magnets :) I love the fact that your refridge it so BIG!

Hi Tea, considering that you've not been there for very long, that's a pretty impressive collection. And you even have paneer!

If I showed you my fridge (er, I guess that's fridgeS) you'd see that 4 tubs of that May Ploy curry paste are "just enough" for us. :D

Hi Tea, I've been enjoying your blog for awhile, and the fridge pics inspired me to actually say something-- do you have a recipe that you'd be willing to share for saag paneer? I've been wanting to try to make it for awhile, but have been a bit intimidated by the recipes I've found... Hope you're enjoying your Seattle stay. It looks lovely!

Oh crap, I hope to fricken HELL that isn't an Amana. Oh man, no.

If it is? You will pay. Buy a second, good fridge, for the garage when it dies and they won't cover it.

xo, Biggles

well your fridge is about 10 times cleaner than mine! I tried to clean out some of the six variations of mustard, only for Daryn to inform me that he uses and loves every single one of them. *sigh*

Your fridge looks like a fridge should - chock full of fresh fruits and veggies along with assorted condiments. I love these fridge pics (the voyeur in me) - I also second Sharon and would love to see a Saag Paneer recipe.

What good is a fridge that doesn't take magnets? No matter, yours looks plenty well stocked and I'm very impressed considering how short your time in Seattle has been. BTW, I'm thinking about a late-summer road trek from SF to Seattle. Thanks for the inspiration!

Kat--yep, it's the biggest fridge I've ever had to myself--I'll just have to jerryrig the magnet situation, eh?

Nora--my first paneer purchase! Thanks, next time I want to try and make my own.

Anita--thanks, I had been worried that I'd gone overboard (especially since I want one more type). Glad I'm not the only one:-)

Sharon--thanks for the comment. I'm planning on posting the sag paneer recipe in a few weeks--want to make it one more time to make sure I have the quantities right. Stay tuned!

Dr. B--it IS an Amana, and I don't like it at all. Hate all the appliances in the place. Don't even get me started about the stove! I guess I can cry on your shoulder if need be?

Darla--the fact that it's clean only means I haven't been here too long. Don't you worry, it'll get smudged. As for mustard, I'm firmly in the Daryn camp--although six varieties is impressive (er, excessive?)

Jessica--thanks, veggies for all! And I'll get on that saag paneer recipe, I promise!

Lisa--Yay, roadtrip! Please let me know your plans--I'd love to have coffee with my favorite Texan, if you have the time. If not, I can at least give you food suggestions for along the route.

Tea - your fridge is lovely, and greens and Thai curry paste are good things to have in abundance.

That IS the BEST fridge magnet EVER!

yours is one of my favourite fridges..know why?..because it has beautiful produce and the building blocks for the kind of food that i adore...

also, it is refreshing to see a fridge that isnt full of stuff with pedigree..not that i have anything against pedigree and 'brands'(even if they are from farmers' markets). in the simplicity of your labelling, your fridge shines because it contains food in it's most honest form....your fridge showcases food YOU eat, not products.

re preserved lemons, remember to rinse them well. discard the pulp. use only the skin. rinse WELL or it can get salty. then slice it..like as thin strips or chop into small dice. sprinkle over anything that needs a little zing..soup/potatoes/salad/meat..even fish!. chicken with preserved lemons and olives is a favourite combo. i like it over spinach salad... with a harissa/argan oil dressing/cured olives and.. of course..preserved lemons.

take care.
