Stalking Wonder: The Art Store

IMG_8081

This week Stalking Wonder takes a field trip, because there is wonder to be found in many places.

Did you ever read the book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron? As a want-to-be writer I did, many times. It's a book aimed at fostering creativity and taking away pesky things like writer's block. Cameron recommends a journaling exercise to be done each day, and once a week she suggests you to go on an “artist’s date.”

This doesn't mean you're to go on a date with an artist. No, you are to take yourself on a little adventure, wherever your fancy might wander—I believe she used a button store as an example. The artist’s date is meant to get your creativity flowing, to delight and intrigue you, to feed your curiosity and make you start to dream a little.

If I were to take myself on an artist’s date, I would go to an art supply store.

There are few places that get me dreaming as much as an art store. The colors, the textures, the sheer possibility of it all. I find it intoxicating.

Who can resist the soft hues of pastels?

IMG_8058

Or the variety to be found in colored pencils.

IMG_8057

There are tubes of things I want to daub, just to see what color they might be.

IMG_8060

And shapes of paintbrushes. What could I do with these different sized paintbrushes? I have no idea, but it makes me want to find out.

IMG_8051

There are things in the art store that I have no idea how to use. I’ve never been a sculptor or a ceramicist, but when I see tools like this I want to try. Who knows, I could be brilliant at it. That’s the joy of going to the art store, it’s full of potential and promise.

IMG_8064

Even a simple, unstained paint brush makes me happy with the possibility.

IMG_8070

And that's really the key to it all. I'm not particularly talented in art. I've dabbled, but nothing significant. My abilities never match up to my hopes for them, but when I step into the art store it's all possible. These colors and textures, maybe I could make them dance. Maybe it could be as beautiful as I hope. Maybe.

Because I've got to tell you, when I am in an art store and the sun filters in and hits the colors in just the right way, it feels like clouds are parting and the choir is singing. Perhaps this is where I go to believe.

IMG_8080

But the part of the art store that I love the most is not the pretty pens and pencils and paint colors. My favorite corner of the art store is where they keep the blank sketch books. Those heavy covers and thick pages, I love even the smell of them. All that gorgeous, creamy paper, what use might it be put to?

IMG_8054

Because at the end of the day, the most beautiful thing of all is the wonder you create yourself.

Have a good weekend, friends. Wherever you are, I hope you find something wonderful.

Beautiful! And now I need a coloring book or to do some collage... my skills never match my dreams either, but unfortunately - or fortunately? - this hasn't stopped me trying.

This is just beautiful. I find even the smell of an art store thrilling. It's not unlike walking into a beautiful vegetable garden and dreaming of the dishes one might create. So much intoxicating possibility. I've always loved stationery stores too and can spend hours hunting the right notebook and pen. It's soothing and exciting all at the same time. Rather like your lovely blog.

Thank you for a lovely trip, Tea :-) I often feel that way in knitting stores. I don't know WHAT I want to knit, but all those beautiful rolls of different textured yarn, organized by color in their little boxes make me want to start 30 million projects all at once!

Beautiful images, as usual, Tea. And actually, I wrote a post today about "making happy." It occurs to me that your little stalking wonder ritual is the perfect way to make happy happen.

It is for me, anyway. :)

Have a great weekend!

My eldest just screeched with joy at the sight of the pencil crayons; I am proud to say that lately he's been more taken with the craft store than the toy store. How inspiring this series is!

And Tea, it may be with a lens rather than a paintbrush, but you are truly "talented in art."

This is so funny. I just was looking at these photos on your flickr set and it made me think of The Artist's Way, and the artist date. Such a perfect artists date! I read that book many times, and often find it comes up in conversation, especially among overworked graphic designers who need to "fill the compost pile" with inspiration.

I am right there with you, sistah -- in fact, any place where things are displayed by color in a pleasing pattern is a happy place for me. (Good fabric stores, the towel department at Macy's...)

Mmm! What I love most about the art store is the SMELL! I can almost smell the mixture of paint, papers, and oily pastels from your post. Since today is payday, maybe I'll treat myself to some new ink pens...

I'm with beyond--these photos are making my mouth water!

Tanita--oh no, never stop trying:-)

LickedS--thank you, and so true. Stationary stores are another weakness. All that lovely paper!

Hopie--you're right. I'm not even a knitter and I can get dreamy in there.

MI--thanks, glad you think so.

Chookooloonks--so true! We all need to know how to make ourselves some happy.

Tara--you sweet thing, I love the image of such excitement over pencils (I sort of feel the same).

Maggie--how funny. I imagine doing art as a job has a whole other set of challenges.

Beyond--far be it from me to enable any art supply purchasing, but I say go for it:-)

Aubrey--thanks, the camera is a Canon XSi, the entry level model for Canon's SLR series. The lens is a 50mm/1.8.

Anita--so true! I hadn't thought about the towel dept, but yes (with the added benefit of wanting to pet them all).

Miss Kate--you're so right. That great art store smell.

Anastasia--that's so funny. Must be the tasty colors:-)

What Tara said! You are truly an artist in your own way.

Oh! Such beauty!

Despite the fact that I'm no artist, I am a sucker for a good art store. I can never leave without a few new notebooks and pens.

Tea those images are so fantastic!! Two places give me the sense of what heaven is... book stores and art stores. The possibilities for creativity and learning are endless. What could be better than that?
I'm loving Fridays because of the wonder you stalk!!

Lovely photos and what a great reminder ... reading your blog has certainly been fortuitous for me as I have just joined The Power of Less Challenge for May (http://challenge.thepowerofless.com). I said I'd read Julia's book The Writing Diet!

Oh my, these are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your Stalking Wonder experiences!

I cannot agree with you more about the allure of the art store. I love the pens best, but do find myself drawn to the notebooks and sketchbooks. Something about well bound good paper is just so comforting.

I too have read The Artist Way on numerous occasions - and adore art supply stores. My husband tells me that I go ADD in stores like that! I wander the aisles thinking about all of the numerous things I could try. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful posts!

i remember The Artist's Way...morning pages...artist dates. it was a gift from a friend. i worked through the book in 2002 with two friends and we'd meet and discuss our progress each week. i, for some reason, was VERY serious about the whole thing and always upset that they weren't feeling as serious as i was at the time. kind of makes me giggle now. Julia Cameron did have some wise things to say about the creative process. have you read If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland? it's a good one too.

Ahhhhhh this is too too much!! I go completely mad in art supply and stationary shops, all my senses go into overload when I see those pretty sets.. I simply adore them! Sets of colours, set of pastels, pencils, papers, brushes. I live for "back to school" sales, thankfully my husband understand my obsession as he has it too somewhat, hehe Awesome stuff for your Stalking Wonder! Thank you

Yes! Ditto ALL these comments! I have just completed The Artist's Way for maybe the 4th-7th time, and it has been like doing it for the first time! Such good practice, those morning pages and artist's dates! I too love your "Stalking Wonder!" And only the fabric store comes close to an art supply store...well, then there IS the bakery, or the Patisserie... or the kitchen supply store with rows of pots... Ahhhh!

I ache when I walk into an art supply store because of all that I can't do. My dad is a wonderful artist and that gene did not get passed to me. When he retired, I bought him an easel, pastels, paints, paper, mats - in short everything that I would want if I had his talent. He hasn't used any of it. Sigh.

i so much enjoy art stores. the colours, the smells, the textures, the whole sense of the whole place and the creativity of the people within.

i so much want to learn to paint properly. i just do what i feel like doing at the moment; i have never had any lessons and am never sure of whether what i am doing it how i am supposed to do it... yu know what i mean?

I love all these supplies and colors! Love these posts!

What a beautiful post! I've just taken a trip to the art store on Friday. I was struck with many of the same feeling that you were. And, while I'm not in the least bit brilliant at painting, I still enjoy it very much. Which is the best reason to do things, I think.

Wow. I just LOVE your photography, especially those colored pencils!

Your art store photographs are enchanting; such a lovely perspective in a place full of color and creative potential!

I don´t know how good you are or aren't at painting or claying, but no doubt you're a great photographer and a sensitive writer. I don't remember now how I found your blog, but it's in my favorites now. Thanks for this enjoyable post.

These close-up pictures are gorgeous. What kind of camera do you use? Mine takes terrible close-up shots.

Absolutely beautiful set of pictures! Love them all.
Watch out: I felt like you did but at the music store and ended up walking out with a guitar one day 10 years ago. I would not be surprised to see your hands covered in plaster or clay soon Tea Claudel!

I went to the art store yesterday and thought of you the entire time, comparing the store to your images. Your pictures won hands down in every department. The Stalking Wonder series is amazing.

Oh, drool... I go all gooey in art supply stores, even though I have no skill in the fine arts department. Bet it made an awesome artist date - I worked through the Artist's Way, but was really bad with the artist dates. I've just started up my morning pages again, thanks for the reminder about the dates!
